1. General Situation:
Brunei Darussalam is currently towards the end of the inter-monsoon period and is expected to enter the Southwest Monsoon early June 2024.
During the inter-monsoon period, the weather conditions in our country are influenced by local wind effect, which typically results in showers or thundershowers at the inland areas during the afternoon, and affecting the coastal and sea areas at night, and sometimes persisting to early morning.
As of 2.00 am local time today, Monday (27th May 2024), Tropical Storm EWINIAR has been upgraded to Typhoon EWINIAR was observed at coordinates 15.5°N 122.5°E, Northeast of the Philippines, approximately 1400 km away from Brunei Darussalam (Figure 1). Typhoon EWINIAR is forecasted to move Northeastwards away from our country.
2. Brunei Darussalam Weather Situation:
Typhoon EWINIAR is still expected to indirectly influence our weather in Brunei Darussalam. Slightly windy condition is expected in the upcoming days, with potential gusty showers or thundershowers to occur especially at sea and coastal areas. Wind gust of up to 50 km/h is expected in or near heavy gusty showers.
Active weather condition is forecasted in the next few days. It is due to the convergence of two different wind directions occurring over our region, resulting atmospheric conditions to be moist and thus enhance the development of rain clouds.
Active weather conditions are expected to start today, Monday (27 May 2024) until Wednesday (29 May 2024) with occasional heavy and thundery showers affecting many areas. Wind speed may reach up to 50 km/h during heavy or thundery showers.
Meanwhile over the Brunei waters, generally sea condition is at slight to moderate state, with wave height of 0.4 m to 1.5 m.
3. Our Advice:
Members of the public are advised to take precautionary actions with respect to the forecasted active weather condition. There is high risk of fallen trees and possibly landslides to occur during gusty and heavy showers conditions.
Risk of flash floods may also occur especially at the low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near the river banks during continuous heavy rain and also during high tide.
