PRESS RELEASE PRIZE PRESENTATION CEREMONY FOR WEATHER PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION IN CONJUNCTION WITH WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY

Tuesday, 14 May 2024 – The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) held a Prize Presentation Ceremony for Weather Photography Competition in conjunction with The World Meteorological Day today at the Brunei
Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja.

In conjunction with the World Meteorological Day celebrated every 23rd March, the weather photography competition was organized with the theme ‘The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations’. The competition was opened to the public to participate for 4 months starting from 10th October 2023 until 10th February 2024.

Present as the Guest of Honour at the prize presentation ceremony was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications.

The ceremony commenced with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah which was led by Yang Mulia Mohd Zharfan bin Haji Awang Ahmad, Assistant Religious Officer at the Department of Mosque Affairs and followed by a welcoming speech by Yang Mulia Dayang Rokiah binti Haji Angas, the Acting Director of Meteorology, as chairperson of the event. In her speech, she highlighted that besides showcasing talent in the field of photography, the weather photography competition was also intended to further raise public awareness of various aspects of weather and climate, as well as their importance which often have impact on individuals and society.

The weather photography competition has received an encouraging response. A total of 234 photographs from 60 participants have been received, based on the relevance and suitability of the photographs and captions to the theme of the competition, depicting various weather scenarios and diversity of weather patterns.

The first place for the weather photography competition in conjunction with the World Meteorological Day was won by Awang Muhamad Azlan bin Mohd Jefri, who won a cash prize of BND500.00 with certificate, the second place was taken by Awang Norsah bin Awang Haji Kassim, who won a cash prize of BND300.00 with certificate and the third place was taken by Dayang Ainatul Ruwaidah binti Awang Rosli, who won cash prize of BND200.00 with certificate.

After the prize presentation ceremony, the Guest of Honour and invited guests toured the Weather Photography gallery displaying the photographs submitted by the participants during the competition period. The exhibition of these photographs will also be opened to the public from 14 May 2024 until 19 May 2024, from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Also present at the event were Chief Executives, Directors, Heads of Departments, Senior Officials, Officers and Staff of the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), Departments and Agencies of the Authority under it.
