Brunei Darussalam is expected to enter the second phase of the Northeast Monsoon in early February 2024 and is expected to persist until March 2024. Normally during this period, the atmospheric condition tends to be more stable with reduced rainfall activities.
Relatively, the months of February and March are categorised as the two driest months with the lowest average rainfall amount recorded in comparison to the other months of the year. Based on climatological data, average rainfall amount for February is 162.9 mm and 143.4 mm for March.

Based on the latest climate seasonal outlook issued by world climate centers, El Nino phenomena with high intesity still persists over the Pacific Ocean and is expected to gradually decrease by June 2024. The presence of El Nino phenomena is expected to further reduce the rainfall amount in our country for February, i.e. slightly below normal with rainfall estimation of 100-130 mm. However, for March, the rainfall amount is forecasted to be normal, i.e. around 110-170 mm.

Potential weather impacts during the second half of the Northeast Monsoon are hot and dry conditions. During the day, daily maximum air temperature at times can increase between 33°C to 35°C, and dry condition may also cause the weather to be slightly hazy.

Nevertheless, rainfall activities will still be expected occasionally especially at night and foggy conditions are likely to occur during early morning. Slightly breezy condition is also expected to occur ocassionally and may cause wave height to increase up to rough state of 2 to 3 meters over Brunei waters. This rough sea condition is dangerous especially to small crafts and recreational and sport activities at sea.

In this regard, members of the public are advised to take necessary measures and precautionary actions with respect to the possibility of hot and dry weather conditions that are expected to occur.
