Tuesday, 3rd October 2023 – The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, conducted the 21st National Weather Briefing at the Auditorium Hall of the Information Department and was attended by 143 representatives from government and private agencies as well as the general public. The National Weather Briefing was presented by Dayang Harnina Binti Morani, a Meteorological Officer from the BDMD regarding Inter-monsoon period and also sharing about the current condition of El Niño.

The National Weather Briefing is one of the Department’s initiatives to invoke engagement with different user groups such as those from First and Safety Responders, Economic and Industry groups, Construction Companies, Insurance Companies, Small and Medium Enterprises and as well as from the Mass Media.
The ultimate goals of the National Weather Briefing are to increase the understanding and awareness of various user groups and the public towards the current weather conditions of Brunei Darussalam. This briefing as well will be able to facilitate the preparedness of user groups and the public in the planning and take any preliminary actions in the event of any weather condition.

The 21st National Weather Briefing focused on the weather condition, climate and future outlook of the intermonsoon period that begins in early October that will persist until the end of November 2023.

Throughout these months of October and November, local wind effects will play an important role in governing our daily weather, with the tendency of fair weather in the morning and isolated coastal showers occurring around midday. Whereas thunderstorms are likely to develop over the inland areas during the afternoon, then spread across the coastal and sea areas during the night, and may occasionally persist to early morning of the following day.

Furthermore, this briefing also highlighted on the current El Niño conditions, which is forecasted to strengthen during December to February next year. This phenomenon is impacting rainfall patterns and temperature across the globe, and our country is no exception to this impact. Hotter and drier weather conditions are likely to happen during the peak of the El Niño event (December to February).
