PRESS RELEASE WEATHER FORUM IN CONJUNCTION WITH WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY 2023

Thursday, 30 March 2023 – The World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on 23rd March to commemorate the enforcement of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) convention in 1950. The World Meteorological day is also celebrated in recognition of the important contributions made by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in ensuring the safety and well-being of communities around the world. This year, the World Meteorological Day is being celebrated with the chosen theme ‘The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations’.
In commemoration and celebration of the World Meteorological Day 2023, Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), today held a Weather Forum, at the Auditorium Hall of the Information Department, Berakas.
Present at the event was Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications.
The panel members of the forum consisted of a Meteorological Officer from BDMD, Dayang Nurulinani binti Haji Jahari, as well as invited panels namely Pengiran Siti Roslina binti Pengiran Haji Abd Hamid, Engineer from the Department of Drainage and Sewerage (DDS), Dayang Siti Joriahati binti Johari, Disaster Management Officer from National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) and Awang Mohammad Zulfadhli bin Haji Mahri, Head of Adaptation and Resilience Unit from Brunei Climate Change Secretariat (BCCS).
With the theme ‘The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations’, this weather forum focuses on the upcoming weather situation in Brunei Darussalam, evidence of climate change in the country and a short history of advancements and achievements in the field of meteorology. Invited panels also discussed various topics revolving around the global threat of climate change and flash floods in Brunei Darussalam as well as the measures to be taken in tackling such challenges.
The forum also includes a presentation on the Inter-Monsoon season which is generally expected to start in April each year. It aims to increase the understanding and awareness of various user groups and the public towards the current weather conditions of Negara Brunei Darussalam as well as to facilitate the preparedness in planning and taking preliminary actions in the event of any weather conditions.
