1. General Situation:

Brunei Darussalam is currently in the Southwest Monsoon period where normally we would experience generally fair weather in the morning and showers in the afternoon.

As of 11.00 am local time today (23rd August 2022), two tropical storms were observed, namely Tropical Storm Ma-On at 17.3°N 122.2°E, Northeast of the Philippines, approximately 1635 km away from Brunei Darussalam

(Figure 1)

and Tropical Storm Tokage at 29.1°N 150.3°E, Southeast of Japan, approximately 4631 km away from Brunei Darussalam

(Figure 1)

Tropical Storm Ma-On is forecasted to move North-westwards and Tropical Storm Tokage is forecasted to move North-eastwards, and both tropical storms are expected to move further away from our country.

2. Brunei Weather Situation:

Tropical Storm Tokage will not affect our weather. However Tropical Storm Ma-On will indirectly cause unsettled weather conditions this week especially on 24th and 25th August. Occasional showers or thundershowers are expected to cross land and sea areas, especially at night until early morning. Showers can be heavy and gusty at times with wind speed may increase up to 45 km/h.

Over Brunei waters, sea state is generally slight, between 0.4 to 0.8 m.

3. Our Advice:

Members of the public are advised to take precautionary actions with respect to the forecasted active weather condition. There is risk of flash floods especially at low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near the river banks during heavy rain and also during high tide. Risk of landslide and falling trees are also possible during heavy showers and gusty condition.
Public, road users and fishermen are advised to always be up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department, and to take necessary actions to ensure safety.
