WEATHER UPDATE FOR BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 13 JANUARY 2021
13 Jan 2021
General Situation:
Brunei Darussalam is currently in the Northeast Monsoon, where generally, unsettled weather conditions are expected during this period with occasional heavy showers or thundershowers. Starting this year until 12th January, our country has been experiencing rainfall daily and our Meteorological Observation Station at Brunei International Airport recorded total amount of rainfall of 277.1 mm. According to long term records, average monthly rainfall total for January is 308 mm.
The increase of rain activities and rainfall amount in Brunei Darussalam are due to the influence from the combination of low pressure system located in the northern part of Borneo and the occurrence of a strong North-Easterly wind surge over our region.
Brunei Darussalam Weather Situation:
The heavy rainfall experienced yesterday over Brunei Muara District, Tutong District and coastal areas of Belait District had caused flash floods and flooding, particularly over the low-lying and flood-prone areas. The occurrence of high tide during the heavy showers had also resulted in the flood situations over areas near river banks.
Based on the latest Numerical Weather Prediction Model, generally unsettled weather condition with occasional heavy showers over Brunei Darussalam is expected to continue until Tuesday, 19th January. Showers or thundershowers are expected especially in the afternoon and evening, and may continue to early morning. Risk of flash floods and flooding remains during these conditions.
Wind condition may intensifies reaching up to 45 km/h during heavy showers.
Brunei Darussalam Sea State:
The strong North-Easterly wind surges currently occurring over the South China Sea will result in the increase of wave height over Brunei waters. The sea condition is expected to be generally at moderate to rough state with wave height reaching up to 3.0 meters until next week.
Our Advice:
Members of the public are advised to take note of the risk of flash floods especially at low lying and flood prone areas during heavy showers or thundershowers as well as the risk of falling trees during gusty condition. There is also a risk of severe flooding during the event of very heavy rain coinciding with high tide.
Rough sea state is dangerous to all small crafts, and sea recreational activities and sports (i.e. swimming, jetskiiing, scuba diving and others).
The public, road users and mariners are advised to always be up to date and to take into account the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning before planning any activities and to take precaution and necessary actions to ensure safety, and also to avoid damage to properties.
