Brunei Darussalam has entered the Northeast Monsoon in early December 2020 and is expected to persist until March 2021. The first two months of Northeast Monsoon (December and January), also known as the rainy season, normally have the highest amount of rainfall as compared to the other months; with the average monthly rainfall for December is 345 mm, while for January is 308 mm (the average rainfall is for a period of 30 years, between 1981 to 2010). During this period, unsettled weather conditions with occasional heavy showers or thundershowers are expected especially during the night and early morning.

Whereas, during the second half of Northeast Monsoon (February and March), the atmospheric conditions tend to be more stable with lesser rainfall; with the average monthly rainfall for February is 157 mm, while for March is approximately 130 mm (the average rainfall is for a period of 30 years, between 1989 to 2010).

During the rainy season, it is important for the general public to note that the risk of flooding or flash floods at low-lying and flood prone areas, and the risk of landslides will be high especially when heavy rainfall occurs for more than 2 hours. The risk of severe flooding may occur during the event of very heavy rain coinciding with high tide. Strong surges from the Northeasterly wind may also result in the increase of wave height over Brunei waters to rough state of up to 3.0 meters.

In light of this, members of the general public, road users and fishermen are advised to always be up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department, and to take precaution and any necessary actions to ensure safety and to prevent any undesirable incidents.
